Who We Are
ELF has been a registered charity since 1987 and, like most charities, started from humble beginnings. It was the vision of Dr Miles Joyner, who had started at the Royal Devon & Exeter (RD&E) Hospital as consultant haematologist in 1980, to improve the lives of all patients with blood conditions through improved facilities, better equipment and research.
Starting with a couple of volunteers who organised raffles and trolley services over the last 25 years we have spent over £4.5 million improving the lives of many thousands from all walks of life from across the South West. Dr Joyner, who retired after 31 years of fantastic service to patients and the development of the Haematology Centre, continues his involvement and passion as a Trustee of the charity.
One of the greatest achievements for ELF was the building of the RD&E Haematology Centre, which was officially opened in 2003. We funded 63% of the £2.4 million cost of the build and fit out of the Centre which now sees over 300 patients per week, a far cry from the 80 per week over 20 years ago. It continues to be described as a centre of excellence providing the best treatment, expert medical care along with a warm and comforting environment.
