History

Elf has been a registered charity since 1987 and, like most charities, started from humble beginnings. It was the vision of Dr Miles Joyner, consultant haematologist at the RD&E in 1980, who was determined to improve the lives of patients with blood cancer and other conditions through improved facilities, better equipment and research.

Starting with a couple of volunteers who organised raffles and trolley services, Elf has expanded its services over the years, spending more than £4.5m improving the lives of thousands of people from all walks of life across the South West. Dr Joyner, who retired after 31 years of dedicated service to patients and the development of the Haematology Centre, continues his involvement and passion as a Trustee of Elf.

One of Elf's greatest achievements  was building the RD&E Haematology Centre, which was officially opened in 2003. The charity funded 63% of the £2.4m cost of the build and fit-out of the centre, which now sees over 300 patients a week, a far cry from 80 a week 20 years ago. It continues  as a centre of excellence, providing the best treatment and expert medical care, along with a warm and comforting environment.
