John Dalton, a former headmaster, was diagnosed with leukaemia in 1984. Following lifesaving treatment at the RD&E Hospital John accepted the invitation from Dr Miles Joyner to take over the small fund, even then known as ELF, and with just a few hundred pounds in the bank, and develop it into a significant charity.

When ELF became a registered charity in October 1987 John was a founder trustee, and nearly 25 years later John is still a trustee of the charity.
