Programme of Study and Course Provider Maple three day Paediatric Palliative care course. Bristol Hospital Trust
Dates covered by this Report 2-4th February 2026
To help ensure the continued success of the ELF Fellowship Programme, we ask all recipients to complete an Evaluation Report at the end of their course, or on a yearly basis for courses which last longer than one year.
Your responses will be used to help us understand the impact of the Fellowship Programme, to inspire future Fellowship applicants and to update the charity’s supporters on the use of their donations. If you have been supported by a named donor, we will also share your Report with them, involving you where possible. Please bear this in mind when writing your answers, as the more detail you give, the more we can inspire others.
If you prefer your Report is not shared publicly, is anonymised or redacted in any way, please note this in the final section. We may still ask if we can use individual quotes from your report, but will only do so with your knowledge and agreement.
1. How did you make the decision to study this course with this particular provider? We are interested in knowing what helped you to make the decision to apply, and where and what to study?
Palliative care is part of my current nursing role. I wanted to undertake some training in this area to support my practice. A ward colleague had done this course previously and recommended it to me
2. How important was it that financial support was available to you? Do you think you still would have undertaken the course if you had not received this Fellowship?
I have been trying to do this course for the last 18 months and finances had been 1 of the limiting factors. I was extremely grateful for the Elf fellowship
I would have struggled to have covered the cost of the course and 3 days accommodation by myself.
3. What was your overall impression of the course (or the course to date, if applicable)? What are some of the key learning points?
An extremely good and useful course for anyone working in paediatric palliative care. Lots of different topics covered.
I found the whole course extremely useful but particularly the sessions on communication skills, trauma based approach to care and providing psychology support for bereaved families. I have been reflecting on my own practice as a result and will put things I have learnt into practice.
The course also involved SIMs where we were given a scenario and were given feedback on how we interacted with the actors within the SIM. This was very helpful in identifying non-verbal ways in which I communicate which I maybe wasn’t aware of and how others would have managed the different situations.
4. What will the impact be on your career and/or on the experience of your patients?
I have been able to reflect on my practice and identify changes which I need to make. I have gained confidence in my ability to care for palliative care patients and in my communication skills.
I intend to educate the ward staff on what I have learnt and therefore, hopefully improve the experience and support of families on the ward who are on a palliative pathway.
Some of the skills I learnt can also be used for caring for all patients, not just in palliative care
I would really recommend this course
5. Please indicate if you prefer any of this report to be anonymised or not shared publicly.
